Who Is Rebecca Ungerman?

Rebecca UngermanRebecca Ungerman is a Tulsa native and has been singing all her life.  She started her auspicious career while still underage, sneaking into Jay’s Place, a seedy local dive, for the Sunday night jam sessions.  This is where she met her longtime collaborator and co-producer Hank Charles, owner/operator of Valcour Studios.  Early in her career, she was the first to bring live music to many local venues, including Gold Coast Coffee Co. and Diamond Jack’s.  Rebecca took a break from pop music and Tulsa for several years and concentrated on her studies, performing and teaching modern and traditional Jewish music.  During this time, she had the pleasure of singing and studying with many wonderful people including Debbie Friedman, the founder of modern Jewish music.  This led to her career as a professional song leader, sharing music across the country with various teen organizations.

Upon her return to Tulsa, she sang for three years with the jump blues band Blue Combo, opening for Little Richard at the Cain’s Ballroom and playing all over Oklahoma and the surrounding states.  In the last couple of years, Rebecca has moved ahead to what has been described as a ‘higher level of musical interpretation.’  Since joining forces with a host of Tulsa’s finest musicians, including Terry Cooper, Jon Glazer, Spencer Sutton, Billy Estes & Brian Lee, she now has the freedom to channel her energies into becoming a skilled song stylist like her idol, Nancy Wilson.  In addition to performing all over Tulsa, Rebecca has donated her time and talent to breast cancer awareness, HIV research and testing and youth in crisis.

“I Just Want…’ is Rebecca’s first solo CD.  Half of the tracks are fan favorites including ‘New York State of Mind’ and ‘Levon’.  The other half showcases Rebecca’s songwriting skills, both individually and with collaborators Steve Elmore and Jon Glazer.  Also featured is Terry Cooper’s beautiful ‘How Many Ways’.  Of special interest is the Ungerman/Glazer composition ‘Stand Up’.  Rebecca assembled a 40 person choir of professional vocalists and friends, under the direction of the amazing Tavis Minner, to record this non-denominational gospel tune.  Rebecca hopes the public will enjoy listening to this CD as much as she enjoyed making it.
